Wine tasting: Alentejo Region

Discover Portugal’s most dynamic wine region

If you live in the Lisbon region, chances are that many of the Portuguese wines you drink come from Alentejo. And for good reason. This vast region in the south of Portugal is one of the country’s most dynamic and recognisable wine areas, often described as the “New World” of Portuguese wine.

Alentejo wines are known for being approachable, fruit-driven, and great value for money. Grape varieties are usually clearly stated on the label, styles are easy to understand, and prices remain refreshingly accessible — making the region popular with both wine lovers and casual drinkers.

But Alentejo is far more diverse than many people expect.

With seven sub-regions and a huge range of climates, soils, and winemaking philosophies, Alentejo offers an impressive spectrum of styles: from big, bold reds to fresh, Atlantic-influenced whites, from large-scale producers to small, artisanal wineries using clay amphoras and from cooler, areas to hot inland plains,

In the Alentejo wine tasting you will get an overview of the different styles, sub-regions and grape varieties from Alentejo, beyond the supermarket bottles. I source some of the wines from the winemakers directly, so there is first hand information on the background of the wines. It is a workshop-style event, we will taste 7 wines, have bites and there is a handout with background explanation for every wine.
