Far in the north-east of Portugal lies Trás-os-Montes, Portugal´s most remote and least explored wine regions. The name itself means “beyond the mountains”, the name defining the sense of isolation, reflected in both the landscape and the wines.
This is a cool-climate region, shaped by altitude, harsh winters, and strong continental influences. Vineyards sit high above sea level, often on poor, rocky soils, resulting in wines with freshness, structure, and a strong sense of terroir. Low yields and old vines are common, and much of the winemaking remains small-scale and traditional.
Trás-os-Montes is a treasure chest of indigenous Portuguese grape varieties. Reds are often based on grapes such as Trincadeira Preta, Bastardo, Tinta Amarela, and Marufo, producing wines that are lighter in alcohol, aromatic, and elegant rather than heavy. Whites, including Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, and Viosinho, are known for their crisp acidity, mineral character, and excellent ageing potential.
In this guided tasting, you’ll explore a selection of wines that reflect the raw, unexplored character of the region, with wines that tell a story of altitude, climate, and resilience. Expect authenticity over polish, freshness over power, and wines that feel distinctly different from the more familiar Portuguese styles.
This tasting is ideal for wine lovers who enjoy discovering hidden regions, learning about native grape varieties, and understanding how climate and geography shape wine. The event includes 7-8 wines from the region, bites, handouts and professional guidance.
